Hello, Daren Carper here, owner of Spotlight Inspection.
I started working in the real estate industry in 2007, first as an agent, then later as a managing broker. That was when I found my love for house science. When working with my own clients, I’d examine the condition of each house while touring to try and find major issues, but when we only had about 20 minutes in each house, there often wasn’t enough time to explore the details.
It was during my time as an agent that I was introduced to home inspectors and what they do. I was immediately hooked. The way houses are constructed is fascinating to me: from how different materials perform (or don’t), the technology developments in modern houses, and just general design evolution that has happened over time. As a tool nut, I also thought the investigative side of home inspecting—using various gadgets to find hidden problems—was exciting.
I pride myself on communication and “bedside manner.“ I’ve worked with many fantastic—and some not so fantastic—inspectors over the years, and it all comes down to communication. I find that the best inspectors provide context around the issues they’re finding so their clients understand what to focus on. A perfect house does not exist; most houses, even brand new ones, have 30+ items come up during an inspection. Having an expert help explain and prioritize that list of deficiencies is important.
I live in Mill Creek with my wife, two daughters, two dogs, and three cats.
